What the data region covers
Your data region determines where your license and account information is stored: your user record, your licenses, the features you have purchased, and the devices your license is activated on.
It is important to read that precisely. The data region applies to licensing and account data. It is not a blanket statement about every piece of information IDEA StatiCa holds — several services run from the EU for all customers regardless of their account region.
| Data | Stored in |
| Your account record — name, email, organization, country | United States |
| Your licenses and purchased features | United States |
| Activated devices on your license | United States |
| Your sign-in credentials | United States |
| License activation sessions | European Union |
| Sign-in sessions | European Union |
| Application usage analytics | European Union |
| Diagnostic and error logs | European Union |
Where to see your region
Sign in to IDEA StatiCa on your desktop. In the sign-in window, below your user name, a Data region section shows your account's region with a flag:

Accounts in the European Union show the EU flag and European Union in the same place.
The section appears only once you are signed in — it is not on the sign-in form while you are entering your credentials.
It also requires a recent version. If you are signed in and still see no Data region section, update IDEA StatiCa to the current release.
Data residency and data sovereignty
These two terms are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don't, and the difference is worth understanding before you rely on either.
Data residency
The physical location where data is stored — which country the servers holding it are in. This is a factual, technical question with a factual answer.
Data sovereignty
Which country's laws apply to that data, and which authorities could compel access to it. This depends on legal jurisdiction, not only on physical location.
Data stored in one country is not automatically governed only by that country's laws. Where a company is headquartered, where its staff are, and which providers it uses all bear on sovereignty — which is why the two can give different answers for the same data.
What IDEA StatiCa offers is data residency. Choosing the US region means your license and account data is stored in the United States. Alongside that, two facts belong in any serious assessment:
- For US accounts the data is stored in the United States, but the requests that read and write it are processed by servers in the European Union. Data at rest is regional; processing is not.
- Several services listed in the table above run in the EU for every account, whichever region it belongs to.
If your organization has a data sovereignty requirement rather than a residency one — for example a contractual or regulatory obligation about which jurisdiction can access your data — contact IDEA StatiCa so it can be assessed properly against these facts.
How your region is chosen
Your data region is set by IDEA StatiCa when your license is created, and your user account inherits the region of the license it belongs to. It is not derived from where you are or which network you connect from — travelling or working from another country does not change it, and does not affect your ability to sign in.
If you need a specific data region, raise it with your IDEA StatiCa contact before the license is issued. That is the point at which it can be set.
Moving between regions
An existing account cannot be moved between the EU and US regions. The two regions are separate systems holding separate records, and there is no transfer between them.
The region is fixed once the license exists
It is set at creation and cannot be edited afterwards — not by you, and not through the standard licensing tools.
A user and their license are always in the same region
A user cannot be attached to a license held in a different region. Attempts to do so are rejected.
"Migrate user" is a different feature
If you have seen this in your account tools or in an invitation email, it moves a user onto a different license — for example from a trial onto a company license. It does not move anyone between data regions.
If your organization's requirements have changed and you need a different region, contact IDEA StatiCa support to discuss the options for your account.
Common questions
My region says European Union, but my company is in the US. Is that wrong?
Probably not. The region reflects how your license was set up, not your company's address — most accounts are in the EU region regardless of where the customer is based.
One thing worth knowing: European Union is also what is shown when no region has been recorded on your account at all, which is the case for older accounts created before data regions existed. So an EU display does not by itself confirm that the EU was deliberately chosen for you. If you need this confirmed in writing, ask support to check your account.
Does my region affect which features I get, or how the software works?
No. Both regions run the same product with the same features. The region affects only where your licensing and account records are stored.
Are my application settings stored in the cloud?
No. Your preferences in IDEA StatiCa — units, templates, display and code-check settings — are saved on your own computer and are not uploaded.
Where are my project and model files stored?
Project files you save locally stay on your own machine or your company's network — IDEA StatiCa does not hold them. For cloud-based sharing and viewing services, contact support for the storage location relevant to your account.
Is my password stored in my region too?
Yes. Sign-in credentials for US accounts are held in a separate US identity service, and EU credentials in an EU one. The record of your active sign-in session, however, is handled in the EU for all accounts.
Can I have some users in the EU and some in the US?
Users always sit in the same region as their license. Separate regions would mean separate licenses, which affects how seats are shared — discuss this with your IDEA StatiCa contact before purchasing.
