Beyond the blueprint: How Klaas Postma won with efficiency using IDEA StatiCa

Here at IDEA StatiCa, we love to see how our community of engineers pushes the boundaries of what's possible in connection design. That’s why we launched the "Best design ever" challenge, inviting our users to surpass a benchmark winning model from M.Sc. Attila Szabó.

We are thrilled to announce that the winner of Node #4 is Klaas Postma from Bouwburo Postma in the Netherlands!

His entry didn't just meet the brief; it perfectly demonstrated the core principles of intelligent, efficient, and practical engineering that we champion.

Meet the engineer: Klaas Postma of Bouwburo Postma

With 25 years of experience, Klaas Postma is the owner and driving force behind Bouwburo Postma, an agency based in Woudsend, Friesland, that specializes in 3D design and detailed calculations for steel constructions throughout the Netherlands. His firm's philosophy is built on a simple yet powerful idea: to deliver the most economical and cost-effective structural solutions without compromising on safety or quality.

The winning formula: smarter design, lower costs

The judging committee of IDEA StatiCa product engineers selected his model for one crucial reason: it achieved similar exceptional structural results as the international winner but with significantly lower production costs.

So, what set Klaas’s winning design apart?

Klaas employed a brilliant strategic shift. Instead of following a more conventional path, he chose to extend the column instead of the beam and utilized the haunch in a highly effective way. This ingenious approach reduced material usage and simplified fabrication, proving that a deeper understanding of load paths and connection behavior can lead to more elegant and economical solutions. His model is a testament to the fact that the best design is often not the strongest one, but the smartest one.

The IDEA StatiCa Workflow: an integral part of the process

Klaas’s victory wasn’t a happy accident; it was the result of a refined workflow built around IDEA StatiCa. For the past seven years, Bouwburo Postma has integrated our software deeply into its design process, moving away from limited standard connection programs and time-consuming hand calculations.

His daily work exemplifies this seamless integration. He and his team design their structures and connections in Tekla Structures. The connections that need checking are then imported directly into IDEA StatiCa Checkbot. There, they apply the maximum forces from the steel calculations and run the analysis. The software provides them with unparalleled insight, allowing them to verify everything from welds and bolts to plate buckling.

"If the connection fails, we try to modify the joint in Idea and check again until everything is ok," Klaas explains. This iterative process ensures that every connection is optimized for both safety and efficiency before a single piece of steel is cut. The ability to quickly test alternatives was undoubtedly key to developing his cost-winning design. For Klaas, this capability is transformative: "I wouldn't know how to calculate our connections otherwise anymore. It's an addiction to solve it with Idea!"

A trusted tool for a competitive edge

For a specialized agency like Bouwburo Postma, trust in their tools is paramount. Klaas firmly believes that IDEA StatiCa provides a significant competitive advantage. His motto says it all: "Everything we can design in Tekla Structures as a model, we can check the connections with IDEA StatiCa Connection!"

He highlights that other programs they used often failed due to limitations, forcing them into manual workarounds. IDEA StatiCa’s freedom from such constraints allows them to tackle any project, no matter how non-standard. One of his favorite features is the ability to identify missing welds, ensuring their digital model in Tekla is complete and that the calculated connection behaves as intended in the real world.

And what would be the advice ?

Klaas’s advice to other engineers looking to optimize their designs is to leverage the real stiffness of their connections. Most structural models are calculated with simplifications like fully restrained or pinned beams, which often lead to over-engineered and expensive solutions. "Fully restrained connections are very expensive and most of the time not needed," he notes. IDEA StatiCa provides the precision needed to find that perfect, efficient middle ground.

Please join us once again in congratulating Klaas Postma on his fantastic achievement! His work is an inspiration to the entire IDEA StatiCa community, proving that with the right tools and a innovative mindset, the best design is always within reach.
