An inverted T-beam is often used in precast building structures or in infrastructure, supporting slabs or girders, speeding up construction and reducing on-site labour. However, the specifics of its design make it more demanding than other types of beams. So, what are the challenges?

An inverted T-beam (or double ledge beam) is typically a reinforced concrete element with the flange at the bottom edge and the web facing upward, opposite to a conventional T-beam. Therefore, the design requires special attention to shear transfer, especially at the web-flange junction. Additionally, the element must be checked for serviceability (SLS) under torsion, deflection, and cracks.

These factors make the inverted T-beam design more difficult. The classical beam theory doesn't apply here, and the codes recommend using more advanced methods. Nevertheless, the traditional approach doesn't describe the serviceability checks (SLS).

This is where the Compatible Stress Field Method (CSFM) offers a significant advantage. The CSFM addresses limitations of traditional methods by capturing the realistic nonlinear behaviour of reinforced concrete, considering the reinforcement influence. This allows it to describe the stress distribution, shear transfer, crack width, and deflection with long-term effects.

Join our free summer series webinar and learn how to use the CSFM-based application IDEA StatiCa Detail to properly model and code-check an inverted T-beam.

You will learn how to define the geometry of the beam, proper boundary conditions, and reinforcement. We'll explain the thorough analysis results. Lastly, you'll see how to generate the Bill of Materials and a detailed, customizable report.
