We bet our boots, every one of you has sometimes a headache of connection design project requirements. How is this connection going to behave? Why did the calculation fail? Let's sort out at least some of these doubts by showcasing at least a few of the most common traps in steel connection design.

For helping structural engineers to enhance their connection design knowledge and skills to a higher level, IDEA StatiCa started its own online training and certification course almost a year ago, in January 2020. Since then, hundreds of engineers already signed-up for the Campus course to undergo this comprehensive training.  During this training, consisting of multiple video tutorials, complex PDF handouts and challenging assessments, they were supported by a dedicated mentor to help them out with their troubles and difficulties.

Thanks to this support team, we collected hundreds of interesting questions, doubts and inspiring thoughts regarding the connection design process in IDEA StatiCa.

This time, we cherry-picked three of the most common but still not easy-to-solve questions and traps the students could fall into during the course. And we decided to bring them to all of you, to show you how to improve your connection design knowledge to avoid these traps in your daily work with IDEA StatiCa Steel applications.

At first, we will take a look at bolts and composed steel cross-sections and their potential errors. In the second trap, we will focus on stubs and their behavior in splice operations. Last but not least, we will explore more on mesh topology errors and why importing plates from DXF is not always the best way.

More about IDEA StatiCa Campus

IDEA StatiCa Campus is a comprehensive self-paced online training for all structural engineers and detailers involved in connection design. The participants will master their knowledge and skills of analysis, design, and code-check of various steel connections.

Up to now, dozens of participants successfully finished the course, rating the training content by 9 of 10 points on average. Structural engineers, as well as steel detailers, appreciate most the well-structured and complex training accompanied by extraordinary knowledgable and dedicated support.

So, if you want to push your steel connection design skills to the next level, the IDEA StatiCa Campus is definitely the place to go.
